Principal Residency: Southern Nash High School
Vision Statement My vision for students is to challenge and inspire every student to reach his/her fullest potential. I will work to spark a passion for learning in each student by offering the best education delivered by the most prepared and capable teachers. |
I spent the majority of my principal residency at Southern Nash High School located in Bailey, North Carolina. Under the direction of Hugh Scott III, I learned so many things. He allowed me to evaluate and observe teachers, tasked me with revamping the weekly homeroom lessons, handle behavior and so much more. Being a K-5 teacher for so many years was very different from being in a high school setting; but I embraced the change and truly enjoyed the experience. I welcomed the challenges and met them head on. I was able to see how school and lunch schedules were created, participated in planning meetings that included all departments, helped present awards during grade level meetings and also was an inclusive part of every grade level meeting. While in my residency, I made myself available to staff and students to help with any issues they may have been having. I was present in the building and made it a point to stop in classrooms daily to see what students were learning. I also developed meaningful relationships with staff and students. I was able to offer constructive feedback after evaluating new teachers who have been in the profession five years of less. |
First Impression
I met with the principal two weeks before I began my principal residency to discuss what the expectations were for me as I started the new year. The treasurer, Mr. Godwin, and Mr. Kennedy, the Assistant Principal greeted me upon entering the office. Mr. Scott, the Principal, greeted me shortly thereafter. He was at the football field watching the team practice. The custodians were in the process of cleaning the building, but the foyer was very clean and I could tell they take pride in making sure the school looks clean to everyone who enters the building.
Mr. Scott took me on a tour of the school. It is a very large school with a fairly new addition that was added to the back of the school. There are approximately 93 teachers on staff, not including cafeteria and custodial staff. There were students on campus who were participating in Fall sports and activities. Mr. Scott made sure to talk and interact with those students as we walked around. In years past, Mr. Scott said that students in the band voiced their concerns about not being acknowledged as much as the athletes are.
