Standard 6: External Development Leadership
A principal will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but, in fact, build community, the leader proactively creates with staff, opportunities for parents/guardians, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investment of resources and good will are not left to chance.

Element 6a. Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach: The principal designs structures and processes which result in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
Parent and community involvement, as well as outreach is pivotal in a school. At Southern Nash High School parents are involved in band booster club, PTO, and athletic booster club. Our school has a connection with the children's home and I worked directly with the liaison to ensure that the needs of the students were being met. I attended a workshop on resiliency that was sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina. As an attendee, I was able to view the documentary, Resilience. During the training, I was made aware of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that greatly affect many of the students in my school. As an administrator, I walked away with a better understanding of how to deal with students who may have several ACEs and the support that can be given to these students.
Element 6b. Federal, State, and District Mandates: The principal designs protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state, and district mandates.
Complying with federal, district and state mandates is critical. One way I assisted during my intern is by handling fire drills. Assisting with monthly fire drills afforded me the opportunity to see how fast students and staff were exiting the building, where they were congregating once they left the building and make necessary changes if they were needed. I created cards that were put into each staff member's emergency bag to indicate if anyone was missing from the class or if everyone was present. During fire drills, I was able to learn the proper safety protocols as well.
